What do these double victories look like and why are they inherently personal and meaningful to you?

Week #3 Discussions: Internal and External Double Victories

Welcome to Week 3!

This week as we’re celebrating the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and reading all about Double Victories, both at home in the US and abroad, I want us to consider what a double victory would mean to/for us personally in this moment. Select a title that frames and reflects these dual victories and in a one concise paragraph, analyze and discuss:

1. An internal victory that you’re either working towards or have recently accomplished

2. An external victory that you’re hoping will come to fruition

3. How do these dualities and victories have an impact on the world

What do these double victories look like and why are they inherently personal and meaningful to you? This is a personal exercise inspired by the black men and women who fought tirelessly so that all Americans and people would be able to and still continue to live freely, today. What are your two victories today, this month, winter, year, etc?

If choosing to discuss localities, communities, land, and environment–you are not limited to geographies of the United States; if your victory is outside a US context, write about that.

What would a Utilitarian do in this case? What would you do and why?

CASE STUDY

Jim, a botanist travelling in South America, comes upon a public execution in a small town. A military captain has lined up twenty Indians. He explains to Jim that they have been chosen at random from the local population, which has recently been protesting against the government. The captain offers Jim a guest’s privilege. If Jim wishes, he can select one of the Indians and shoot him himself and then the other nineteen will go free. Otherwise, the execution by the captain’s henchman, Pedro, will go ahead as planned.

What would a Utilitarian do in this case? What would you do and why?

Reflect & Retrieve #2
This 1965 quotation from Black intellectual and activist James Baldwin has served as touchstone for this class:
History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read. And it does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do. It could scarcely be otherwise, since it is to history that we owe our frames of reference, our identities, and our aspirations.

For Reflect & Retrieve #2, you’re responsible for offering an answering the question:
How do we “carry” early African American history “within us”?
In order to craft your answer to this question, you are responsible for reading ONE of the following articles:
2040: When Black History Is Unearthed, Who Gets to Speak for the Dead
2040: The Hidden and Eternal Spirit of the Great Dismal Swamp

Then, you are responsible for writing an at least 300-word response essay that explains and analyzes how the story told in your article of choice is an example of how we carry early African American history within us.
To compose a successful essay, you should connect your article of choice to historical information learned throughout this class, making strong, specific connections between the story in the article to historical information from multiple Snapshots or Scrapbooks. You also should incorporate multiple themes from our 2040 Theme Encyclopedia to smartly, sharply, and clearly analyze how your article of choice is an example of how we carry early African American history within us.
In short, think about contextualizing your article of choice with specific, historical evidence and examples from our Snapshots and Scrapbooks. While there is not a requirement for the number of different Snapshots, Scrapbooks, or themes you must engage with, you strongly are encouraged to include information and analysis from a diverse spectrum or sampling of our Snapshots and Scrapbooks.

Reflect & Retrieve #2 is worth 20 points.

What elements of the history and culture of the religion that Africans brought with them across the Middle Passage contributed to any faith tradition in the U.S.? What are some values or practices of African-descended culture that we can now see in U.S. society, religious or otherwise, now that you have been in the course for several weeks?

Brief African American Religion in Society Paper

For this assignment, each student will conduct research to write a 4-6 page paper on one component of the history and culture of African American religion and its effects in the U.S. or across the globe. Your research paper must answer a question. For example: What elements of the history and culture of the religion that Africans brought with them across the Middle Passage contributed to any faith tradition in the U.S.? What are some values or practices of African-descended culture that we can now see in U.S. society, religious or otherwise, now that you have been in the course for several weeks?

You may choose to develop a research question in one of the following topics areas. Make sure that you present a question, then you can answer the question in your research.

Detroit’s Contribution to African American Religious Expression and Experience (see special note below)
African American Religion and Food
African American Religion and Women
African American Religion and Gender
African American Religion and the Human Body
African American Religion and Protest
African American Religion and EducationAfrican American Religion and Health and Medicine
African American Persons of Faith and Multi-cultural Places of Worship
African American Religion and Popular Culture

The subject of your paper can be someone or something introduced in class (a key figure(s), an organization, an institution or a social or cultural feature or element of religious experience or spirituality). Your research must go beyond repeating information learned in the course. Expand on that concept in any of the themes above as they related to African American religious experience or African-descended religious experience. Return to notes from early in the course to identify an aspect of religion and spirituality of interest to you.

Detroit option: Detroit’s Contribution to African American Religious Expression and Experience

Detroit has made distinct contributions to the development of contemporary African American religious expressions. It is the birthplace of both the Nation of Islam and Pan-African Orthodox Christianity (originally a Black Nationalist Christian sect). In addition, contemporary Black Liberation Theologies were sermonized and written in the city and at nearby Adrian College. Furthermore, Detroit has been one of the prominent North American homes of Spiritualist movements which allowed African American women a place for public leadership as well as enterprise. Then there are the extraordinary contributions of African American religious leadership to social justice including organized labor development.

For this assignment, each student will conduct research to write a 4-6-page paper on one component of this history. Specifically, students will write a paper that develops this theme:

During the twentieth century, Detroit held a unique place among northern Great Migration urban centers. Its industrial base helped to create the U.S. middle class, and the city and the region were the home of organized labor. In your paper, select a key figure(s), an organization, an institution or a social or cultural component that help to make an argument about the unique way that the synthesis of Detroit’s race, class, and economic opportunity contribute to it becoming a home for innovative black religious expression.
