Provide an example of an issue in any context, i.e. environmental, social, educational, or financial (that has not yet been used in the course content or presented by your peers) and explain the factors contributing to the issue.

Discussion 5 Ecology

Characterizing feedback loops

The work you have completed in this module and the ones before it has shown you many examples of models and systems that can be explained in terms of positive and negative feedback. The discussion for this module asks you to reflect on these models and explain a system in terms of feedback.

Provide an example of an issue in any context, i.e. environmental, social, educational, or financial (that has not yet been used in the course content or presented by your peers) and explain the factors contributing to the issue.

Represent the issue within both the context of a negative feedback loop with a balanced outcome and in a positive feedback loop with an amplified outcome.

What is Wilderness? Why is it so important and what can be done to protect it? Is there any controversy in the United States about this? What is your opinion? What is the nearest wild place near where you live? Describe it.

Mod 3 essay

Compose a 300-word (minimum) essay on the topic below. Essays must be double-spaced and use APA-style in-text citations to reference ideas or quotes that are not your own. You must include a separate bibliography.

Explain how each one of the results of the Experimental Forest experiments illustrates how human activities can have unintended harmful environmental consequences.

Mod 1 essay

Compose a 300-word (minimum) essay on the topic below. Essays must be double-spaced and use APA-style in-text citations to reference ideas or quotes that are not your own. You must include a separate bibliography.

Relate each of the three scientific principles of sustainability to the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest controlled experiment (“Core Case Study” at the beginning of Chapter 2).

Explain how each one of the results of the Experimental Forest experiments illustrates how human activities can have unintended harmful environmental consequences.

Give other examples of unintended consequences and harmful effects of human activities and explain.

Using your own words, write a short descriptive essay that defines and explains the selected environmental impacts of deforestation.

Deforestation

Using your own words, write a short descriptive essay that defines and explains the selected environmental impacts of deforestation. As you write, imagine you are talking to a friend who has no knowledge of this topic. In short, write the way you speak, using a conversational tone. Also, try to alternate short sentences and longer sentences to make your writing more readable.

Paragraph 1 is your lead paragraph. It will contain an overview of what you have to say about these three topics: disruption of the carbon cycle, disruption of the hydrologic (water) cycle, and the reduction of species diversity.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, are your body paragraphs.
Paragraph 2 should describe how deforestation disrupts the carbon cycle.
In paragraph 3, you’ll write about how deforestation disrupts the hydrologic (water) cycle.
In paragraph 4, you’ll explain how deforestation is related to declining species diversity.
Paragraph 5 is your conclusion paragraph. Here, you can describe how you feel about the three effects of deforestation discussed, and what we might do about it.

Describe your study species: Provide the natural history and ecology. Describe mating patterns, distribution, and conservation status, if applicable. Outline any fun facts that relate to your study species.

Assignment 4 General Guidelines

Overall Structure:

All PowerPoint slides must be emailed to your TA by the first day of presentations — regardless of presentation date.

Presentations must be 10 minutes in length.

Approximately 5 minutes will be given for questions following each presentation.

Assignment 4 is worth 25 points.

Background:

  • Describe your study species:
  • Provide the natural history and ecology (e.g. feeding behaviors, any predators, trophic positioning, and time the species is active).
  • Describe mating patterns, distribution, and conservation status, if applicable.
  • Outline any fun facts that relate to your study species.

Study 1:

Discuss one study from Assignment 2 that examines the ecology of your species

  • Introduction: Introduce the main topic along with the central questions and/or hypotheses.
  • Methods: Be able to describe the overall experimental design and general statistical analyses.
  • Results: Present the results using tables and figures that were presented in the paper. Do not feel the need to present every result, but enough to get the main point of the results section.
  • Discussion: Provide the overall takeaway from the study. Make sure to include both your own interpretation, as well as the author’s interpretation of the results.

Bibliography:

  • Provide a bibliography or references cited on your last PowerPoint slide. Make sure it follows the Ecology journal format.

Quick tips for a good presentation:

Refrain from using overly wordy slides; your slides should be readable from any location in the class.

Your figures should also be clear. The text in each figure should be readable. Try to limit the amount of figures on one slide. Figures are generally better than tables.

Take your time when giving a presentation. Do not rush through your slides.

Limit the amount of reading you do from your slides. Give as much eye contact as possible. You want to engage with your audience.

Make sure to speak with volume and practice your talk ahead of time.

Why did you choose this animal? Give us one personal connection or fascinating fact that you know about this animal that led you to choose it.

Arabian Oryx presentation

Doing presentation slides About ( Arabian Oryx) and covering all information that i will provide you in two files the description and rubric follows each step and covers all information in each slide. Provide outline of each slide for explaining because the slides should be as pointed.

Format of Presentation – each number corresponds to the material needed for each slide of your presentation:

1.) Title Slide – this should include the common name, scientific name and a catchy phrase/title to interest us in your animal. It should also include a picture of the animal.

2.) Taxonomic Group – starting with Kingdom Animalia – list the Phylum, Class, Order, and Family to which your animal belongs, as well as list the scientific name of the animal itself.

3.) Habitat, Range, and Ecology – this slide should include a description of the types of habitat(s) where your species is found (freshwater wetlands, temperate forests, marine intertidal?), where it is found geo-graphically (its range), and some interesting facts about the animal’s ecology (Is it a predator? What does it eat?, etc.).

Photos and maps enhance the information.

4.) One distinctive morphological characteristic of your animal that appears to be an adaptation to its habitat or lifestyle (think of special appendages, body shape as related to movement, etc.)

5 and 6.) Research done on your animal – use one slide to give the overall goals and objectives of the primary literature paper that you chose to read about your animal (was this study done to understand this animal’s mating behaviors, is it a phylogenetic study to understand its closest relatives, is it a look at how this species responds to changes in carbon dioxide levels in the ocean?)

On the second slide, include the most important figure or table from your paper that summarizes the re- sults of the study on your animal. When you give your presentation, you will need to walk us through both axes of the figure or the columns of information on the table and summarize the trends that it shows.

7.) Why did you choose this animal? Give us one personal connection or fascinating fact that you know about this animal that led you to choose it.

8.) Literature Cited Slide

With the exception of the literature cited slide, do not go below 24pt. font. Limit your presentation to 8 slides.

Explain the adverse effects of global warming on life, including sinking territories, rapid resource depletion, and illnesses among organisms.

Global warming essay

“The weather patterns are rapidly changing in all parts of the world. The increased rainfall in certain regions affects the balance that animals and plants need to survive. Climate changes cause health problems, animal migration, and the lack of food resources.”

Bussey’s essay points out the dire fact that global warming is no longer a prediction but an ongoing crisis. She explains the adverse effects of global warming on life, including sinking territories, rapid resource depletion, and illnesses among organisms.

Climate change is a global environmental health issue affecting all countries in the world and is a result of human development and activity. It is related to the ecological footprint of the human population. In this assignment, you will analyze your own individual ecological footprint and will examine/compare with the footprint of developed and developing countries:
