Find a secondary source (magazine, newspaper, etc.) which cites a primary source for its evidence and review both the primary and secondary source for how well they relate the information to their prospective audiences.

Journal Critique Assignment

While this is being assigned in module 6 – it is not due until the end of the land use change unit! You do not need to have this submitted by the end of unit 2.
The presentation of a scientific result can mean nearly everything in terms of how it is responded to in terms of public acceptance and policy. Often, the ability to communicate science in secondary sources and relay key findings in primary sources can either enhance or limit the way non-scientists act on scientific findings.
In this assignment, you will: 1) Find a secondary source (magazine, newspaper, etc.) which cites a primary source for its evidence and 2) review both the primary and secondary source for how well they relate the information to their prospective audiences. The primary goal of this assignment is to assess the quality of the presentation of the scientific findings to different populations.
1) Choose a broad area of global change from one of our three units (Climate, land use, and biodiversity) and search the secondary literature for a topic you find particularly interesting.
2) Find a secondary article that either focuses on OR cites a primary literature source.
3) Review both of these sources in terms of:
– Citations for both articles in APA format
– A summary of the topic, research presented, and key findings of the two articles. Include the key findings from the primary article and what the focus of the findings of the secondary article was
– The quality of the presentation of each article separately – summarize their effectiveness in term of how well they present their key message in your opinion
– How well the articles relate to one another (e.g. does the secondary source sensationalize the issue?) and is there any problem in presentation for either?

Which solution was above the other? Why did the solutions seperate and not mix? How does this lab help to represent what happens in estuaries? How does this type of environment impact the organisms that live there (esturaries)?

lab report

Place a few drops of red food coloring to a clear glass that contains cold water from your refrigerator (less than half full).
In a separate glass of the same type, make a saltwater solution using the same amount of water as you did in step 1. Heat that water in the microwave for1 1/2 minutes or until warm. Be careful not to burn yourself. Dissolve table salt into that warm water (mix a little at a time until it does not dissolve any further.) Then place a few drops of yellow food coloring to that solution. Mix well.
Now, slowly pour the red water solution (freshwater) into the saltwater solution (yellow solution). The slower you pour the red into the yellow the better your results will be. Hint: If you pour it so that the red solution moves down the side of the yellow container, slowly, you will receive nice results.
Do not stir or mix this combined solution. You should see a separation of the two solutions, even though they are in the same container.
In a word or google document, describe what you observed as you mixed these solutions and then continue to monitor the solution recording what you see happening each minute for 10 minutes. Make a data table of these observations.
Take pictures of the mixture immediately after mixing and then after 10 minutes. Place a copy of these pictures in your lab write up and label the pictures.

Answer the following analysis questions.
Which solution was above the other?
Why did the solutions separate and not mix?
How does this lab help to represent what happens in estuaries?
How does this type of environment impact the organisms that live there (estuaries)?
What types of stress does this place on the organisms?
Write up this lab as a FULL lab report

IB ESS
Topic 5: Soil Systems

Mini-Project – 20 pts

Food Production Project

Purpose

For this project, you will design a poster used to highlight a behavior change someone could make that would help increase the sustainability of our food production systems. The poster should be persuasive–you are trying to convince people to make the change you’ve chosen! There are many options for a topic, but here is a list below to get you started:

Food Production

  • Mixed cropping/interplanting
  • Trickle irrigation
  • Growing GM foods (ex–inserting nitrogen fixing genes)
  • Hydroponics (growing plants without soil)
  • Agroecology
  • Greenhouse growing (instead of open fields)

Consumer Behavior

  • Choosing crops based on sustainability
  • Eating lower on the food chain (less meat)
  • Ugly food movement
  • Food education
  • Eating insects!
  • Eating local
  • Reducing food processing or packaging

Once you have chosen a topic, you will do research to see how this behavior change might affect the sustainability of our food systems. You will create a one-page (only) poster on canva to show your research. You can also draw it by hand and take a picture. It should include:

  1. A description of the problem (6 pts)
    1. What problem is your solution or behavior going to solve? Why is it a problem? Give statistics where possible (e.g. 100 trees are lost every year due to logging!)
  2. A description of your solution (6 pts)
    1. What exactly should farmers/consumers/others do?
    2. Why does this solve the problem?
    3. Any estimates of impact should be included (e.g. this would save 50 trees per year)
  3. Visuals (4 pts)
    1. Include visuals and pictures. Your poster should be thoughtfully designed and easy to read
  4. Participation in Small Group Share (4 pts)

Describe how the human relationship to nature will be different from what it is at present.

Prior to beginning work on this final paper, review all chapters of Bensel and Carbone’s Sustaining Our Planet text (2020).

In this paper, you will explore what a future sustainable world might look like, and in the process of doing so, extend your previous descriptions of selected terms and explain how they may play a role in aiding us in achieving environmental sustainability on a global scale.

The Journey to Sustainability

Imagine a future (probably a long time from now) in which human beings have achieved environmental sustainability on a global scale. That means that we as a species have figured out how to maintain a lifestyle that can go on indefinitely. Humans will exist in harmony with their environment, not needing more resources than can naturally be replenished. What would such a world be like? How might we get there from here?

In this final assignment, you will play the part of science-fiction writer, imagining and describing what a sustainable Earth, inhabited by humans, might look like in the distant future. You will need to provide examples throughout to support your descriptions. You should include all the terms that you have researched during Weeks 1 through 4 of this class, underlining each term as you include it. Be sure to expand on your terms and include other concepts that you learned in the course. Provide as detailed a picture as possible of how that future world might function on a day-to-day basis. In your paper, use grammar and spell-checking programs to insure clarity. Proofread carefully prior to submitting your work. Finally, you will submit the document to Waypoint.

Your paper will consist of seven paragraphs using the format below to address the elements with the assumption that environmental sustainability has been achieved:

Paragraph 1:
Describe how the human relationship to nature will be different from what it is at present.
Examine how humans will cope differently with the ways that natural phenomena like hurricanes affect lives.
Paragraph 2:
Describe what Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems will look like in a sustainable future.
Explain what humans have done differently to enable biodiversity and ecosystems to function sustainably.
Paragraph 3:
Examine how agricultural production will be different in a sustainable future.
Paragraph 4:
Differentiate between how humans will manage water resources (fresh water and ocean) in the sustainable future compared to how it is done now.
Paragraph 5
Examine how humans will meet their energy needs in the future in a way that will enable maintenance of a sustainable, habitable atmosphere and climate.
Indicate the changes that humans have made that are enabling them to maintain a healthy atmosphere and climate for all.
Paragraph 6:
Describe how waste management will be different in a sustainable future.
Indicate the changes have been made to how humans think about and treat what is currently called “waste.”
Paragraph 7:
Summarize some of the major social, economic, political, and ecological choices and tradeoffs that will need to be overcome for this sustainable future to arrive. What are some of the major issues and challenges humans will have to face in order to achieve sustainability on a global scale?
