Should such hospitals be able to limit what services they provide based on those identities? Do these organizations, not just individuals, have rights of conscientious refusal?

Week 4 Forum

Initial Post Instructions

Prepare an initial post in which you answer ONE of the following questions.

Unlike pacifists who are drafted for military service, health care providers choose to take on a job where they might be asked to do something contrary to their moral beliefs. On the other hand, requiring providers to violate their conscience as a condition of employment seems problematic. What do you think? Your response should reference at least two specific tools/concepts/factors introduced in the lectures and one idea/argument introduced in any of the other learning materials posted.

How might you determine whether certain actions or practices are compatible with your basic beliefs and values? Would you accept a position at an institution whose values are contrary to your own? Why or why not? And most importantly, how might you make this decision?

Week 4 Journal

Instructions
Craft a brief response to the following questions:

What is your experience with conflicts between client/patient care needs and the personal values and beliefs of others? (If you’ve not had experience with clients or patients, you can think about any other workplace-based experience in which you had to consider the needs of the people you were serving with the personal values and beliefs of others. And if you still can’t think of an example, then cite one from any of the readings.)
How might you determine whether certain actions or practices are compatible with your basic beliefs and values?
Would you accept a position at an institution whose values are contrary to your own? Why or why not? And most importantly, how might you make this decision? (i.e. What questions would you ask yourself and the institution? What considerations would you need to explore?)
Your response should be at least 300 words – and you’re welcome to write more, of course!

In this paper, how would you respond to Bill? Using the ethical principles of conduct and character explain the reason for your answer.

Reflective Paper

You are faced with a personal ethical dilemma. Bill and you have been best friends for over 10 years and work for the same company. One day your boss asks to see you. Your boss explains that the company is not doing well and will have to lay off people. One of those individuals is Bill. The boss states that if you tell Bill you will be fired on the spot. In the meantime, the company will be keeping Bill for at least another month so he can finish the project he is working on. You also realize that Bill has just purchased a new home for his family. After you leave the office, Bill approaches you and states he saw you with the boss. Bill says, “I know they are laying people off, am I one of those individuals?”

In this paper, how would you respond to Bill? Using the ethical principles of conduct and character explain the reason for your answer.

Do you have an ethical dilemma? Discuss your approach to handling this situation.

Ethical Decision Making

Suppose you work for the Lee K. Fawcett Plumbing Company as Mr. Fawcett’s administrative assistant. Recently Mr. Fawcett asked you to type some financial statements from his hand-written notes so that he can take them to the bank as part of a loan application. This exercise seems odd to you because the company’s CPA recently delivered the monthly financial statements that she prepares. While typing the financial statements you notice that the building the company rents is listed as an asset. Also, you write checks each month for the monthly payments on two car loans, and these are not listed as liabilities.

Do you have an ethical dilemma? Discuss your approach to handling this situation.

In this situation, what would you do? Tell the parents, or not? Provide a justification for your choice. How have you balanced beneficence with privacy and confidentiality?

CONFIDENTIALITY AND PRIVACY

As we have learned from our reading this week, beneficence in a moral sense means more than “do no harm.” It also involves actively seeking to help those in need, and protecting others from threats. Privacy and confidentiality, on the other hand, involve trust. There are only two ways that a professional can break that trust. One is when the professional violates trust through negligence, and there are professional sanctions for that. But in more serious cases, the professional must choose to intentionally violate their client’s trust. Intentional violations of trust have to be justified.

What if an intentional violation of privacy and confidentiality is justified, but it will violate the principle of beneficence? Worse, what if your actions cause harm no matter what? What do you do, and how do you justify it? In this discussion, we are going to debate this question. Moral dilemmas are particularly tough when the choices are few and results could be costly. Now is the time to seek the support of your peers.

Initial Post:
Carefully explore the case study in Meyers Chapter 6, study 6.4.1, and then run the dilemma through your growing SmartArt toolkit. By Thursday of Module 5, share your answers to these questions:

In this situation, what would you do? Tell the parents, or not?
Provide a justification for your choice. How have you balanced beneficence with privacy and confidentiality?
Describe how the counselor might solve this dilemma from a consequences perspective, virtue ethics perspective, and principle perspective.

In reflecting on this story, were you satisfied with what you did? Why? Name one way that you could have done it better. If you had a chance to do it again, what would you do? According to which moral principle?

Moral Principles

Sometimes, moral dilemmas will be so tough that we will need resources outside of our personal ethical decision-making toolkit which will come from facts and context. But we will need support as well. The support of peers will be indispensable, and in addition, one of the most powerful tools you will ever have is a concrete statement of who you are as a moral person. In this discussion, we’ll begin the process of self-examination. By the end of the module, you will have a concrete visualization of your moral self. You will be able to refer to it any time you need to, and especially when the decision you are facing is very hard. It will be a wonderful reminder of what a good person you are.

Initial Post:
Reflect back to the contents of Chapter 2 section 2.7, “Moral Principles” (pp. 63-64). By Sunday of Module 5, share a story from your own life in which one of those moral principles was tested. It might be an autobiographical story, or one which you have observed. In your post, reflect on these questions:

What moral principle was at stake?
What was the outcome?
In reflecting on this story, were you satisfied with what you did? Why?
Name one way that you could have done it better. If you had a chance to do it again, what would you do? According to which moral principle?
Use explicit references to concepts, theories or philosophers from your textbook that apply.
