  • Discuss how will you proceed?
  • What will you do first?
  • What research would you conduct?

Write an essay modeled on Naylor’s in which you define “the meanings of a word”. Define the role of a wife or husband, mother or father, sister or brother, daughter or son.

Essay #2 (Definition)

Prompts

Choose one of the three prompts below for your essay of definition.

Before starting, consult (however briefly) the doc posted in Bb (Week 8) named “Writing a Definition Essay.” It is bound to help you approach the task wisely, particularly the subsections under “Developing an Essay by Definition.” Those pages truly offer great advice about beginning, organizing, drafting, and proofing. I’ve made the prompts available far earlier than I normally would so that you can take advantage of the guidance in that doc.

1. Write an essay modeled on Naylor’s in which you define “the meanings of a word” (or words). The word you choose might be a stereotype based on ethnicity, gender, appearance, or income, for example. Have you found, like Naylor, that meaning varies with context? If so, make the variations clear.

2. Define the role of a wife or husband, mother or father, sister or brother, daughter or son. In your prewriting write down the responsibilities, activities, and relationships that define that role, and then in your essay elaborate your ideas on the topic. You could, if appropriate, follow Brady’s model by showing how the role is influenced by the expectations of another person (or people), but be careful about the way you do that: Her exaggeration and irony do have a purpose, but writers must take care not to let a good rhetorical tools become abusive: dont inadvertently ostracize readers by failing to make an appropriate concession or acknowledge an important limit. Brady’s definition may not have reached its full potential since it focuses on only the disappointing or negative.

3. Using Gilb’s essay as a model, write an essay that defines a human feeling or characteristichappiness, for example, or fear or courageor some notion that you find important but that you think some (many?) frequently misunderstand. As Gilb does, present a wide range of examples to suggest various aspects of your subject.

NOTE: Remember to adhere to the Graded Essay Standards posted in the Bb Classroom.

Explain what the receiver does with each received packet on the right of the diagram. Calculate the minimum number of sequence numbering bits that should be used in the transport layer header of this rdt scheme.

Problem 1 (19pts)

The diagram below shows the timing progress of a packet and ACK exchange to transfer 9 packets (each of size 2kB) between a sender and a receiver using a GoBack-3 rdt, over a network with throughput 10Mbps, loss-error probability of 5% and a round-trip duration of 2ms.

Who authored & illustrated this? What do they want us to believe about the world? What kinds of behavior does the book present at normal? How might this story differ if told from the dominant perspective?

Children’s book essay

General Guidelines

Select one children’s book, which is developmentally appropriate for children ages three to six years. You will analyze the text’s cultural relevance, as well as it’s developmental fit based upon four early childhood developmental characteristics.

Original guidelines required you to link to 4 developmental characteristics. Revised guidelines only require you to link to 2 developmental characteristics.  They may be from two different developmental domains (physical, cognitive or psychosocial), or from within the same developmental domain (i.e. both from the cognitive domain).

Your essay will be about 4.5 to 6 pages in length (including title page and reference page) and will be comprised of the following sections:

Required Sections

Title Page

Include a color of the children’s book, a title, your name, school, course number, term

Introduction

1/2 – 2/3 page.

Briefly describe the book (title, number of pages, content, illustrations, font size, language – examples of vocabulary and average length of sentences, etc.). Explicitly discuss how the book is meant for preschoolers, providing specific examples of the above-mentioned aspects.

Critical Analysis of Diversity

¾ – 1¼ pages.

If you have selected a book that centers characters from non-marginalized backgrounds, address each of the following questions.

  • Who authored & illustrated this? (this will require you to research the author/illustrator)
  • What do they want us to believe about the world? What kinds of behavior does the book present at normal?
  • What assumptions does the book make about age, gender, race, class, sexuality, disability status and culture (including the age, gender, race, class, sexuality, disability status and culture of the reader)?
  • Whose voice(s) is missing or minoritized AND what might the story be like from that missing perspective?

If you have selected a book that centers characters from historically marginalized backgrounds (race, sexuality, disability status, etc.) address each of the following questions

  • Who authored & illustrated this? (this will require you to research the author/illustrator)
  • What do they want us to believe about the world? What kinds of behavior does the book present at normal?
  • How might this story differ if told from the dominant (non-marginalized) perspective?
  • Whose voice(s) might still be missing or minoritized AND what might the story be like from that missing perspective?

Feeling stuck or intimidated by his section? You might find this Guide for Selecting Anti-Bias Children’s Books helpful.

Analysis of Developmental Characteristics

1-1.5 pages total (approximately 1/2 – 2/3 page per developmental characteristic)

Analyze the developmental appropriateness of the book, by relating it to two early childhood developmental characteristic.  For each of the two subsections, include

  • Topic sentence clearly stating the developmental domain (e.g., psychosocial development) and developmental characteristic (e.g., Erikson’s stage of initiative vs guilt).
  • An explanation of the developmental characteristic/ability/issue. Reference and cite either the textbook, lecture, or outside reputable source (e.g., a peer reviewed journal article, not a blog post). Paraphrase rather than directly quoting (I want to see your understanding & ability to synthesize the information, not just your ability to cut and paste).
  • Discuss how the developmental characteristic/ability/issue is demonstrated in the children’s book. Consider elements such as storyline, morals, language used, illustration and more. Some links may seem obvious, and others you can arrive at my discussing how the children’s book would be read/experienced alongside a caregiver.

First Developmental Characteristic

Second Developmental Characteristic

Summary

1/3 – 1/2 page

Summarize, briefly recapping the developmental characteristics that align with the children’s book, as well issues of diversity present or not present.

References

Include a reference page, following APA 7th Edition.

If the author completed the methods described, would s/he have a strong, credible answer to the evaluation question? Why or why not? For example, is there important evidence (data) that would be missing? Would any of the methods provide unnecessarydata?

Classmate evaluation plan feedback

Prepare your feedback classmates evaluation

Prepare feedback by following this specific process:

First, quickly read the draft all the way through. Do not stop to write notes, but highlight any words or sentences that you don’t easily understand.

Next, reread the draft carefully and jot down answers to the following questions:

  1. Is the evaluation question specific, feasible, and easy to understand? If not, why? And are all terms defined as needed?
  2. If the author completed the methods described, would s/he have a strong, credible answer to the evaluation question? Why or why not? For example, is there important evidence (data) that would be missing? Would any of the methods provide unnecessarydata?
  3. Do the methods seem feasible and realistic? For example, is the desired data accessible? Would the author have time to complete the methods? What details of the methods need to be explained more fully?
  4. Overall assessment
    • What is the strongest element of the draft?
    • What would be the single most useful revision the author could make?
