Health Information Talk

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF COURSEWORK

This coursework component requires you to develop a hypothetical presentation/talk intended to be delivered to healthcare providers and/or family/partners/carers; to provide psychoeducation on ONE chronic physical health condition population (diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or chronic pain). Healthcare providers and family/partners/friends play a key role in supporting people living with a chronic health condition, but may not understand how they can support psychological wellbeing without professional psychological support/input. The talk will therefore be intended to equip informal/formal caregivers with greater knowledge about the common psychological struggles of living with a chronic physical condition, and provide some low-intensity tips on how they can better support people who live with a chronic condition both emotionally and socially (e.g. empathy, communication skills). Further details and tips to complete this coursework will be provided during lectures.

The talk should be planned using Microsoft PowerPoint (15 slides maximum) and you will then record the presentation/talk either using Microsoft PowerPoint or using MS Teams (by sharing the PowerPoint on screen and recording the Teams session OR using the recording function on MS PowerPoint). For guidance on how to record using MS Teams see written instructionsthe bits highlighted in yellow are relevant for you). Your presentation should last around 10-15minutes (MAX 15minutes) and use up to 15 PowerPoint slides.

Discuss how developmental theories of psychology contribute to our understanding of child offenders.

 Child offenders

Discuss how developmental theories of psychology contribute to our understanding of child offenders.

Write a section in which you use the theory or principle to either understand or solve the problem (~1 page). Describe a previous attempt to address the problem, and discuss whether it was effective or ineffective. Include at least one reference.

Social Psychology (PSYC 332)

This third application paper follows the same format as the first two, but choose a different problem, and a different social psychological theory. Your assignment is to write a short (~3 pages, or 900 words) APAstyle paper in which you discuss a pressing social problem, summarize a social psychological theory, and describe how this theory could be (or has been) applied to help understand or solve this problem. These papers are worth 50 points each.

Start your paper by describing a pressing social problem (~1 page) and provide at least one reference. In summarizing the nature of the problem, make sure to link the cause of the problem to human behavior. Be as specific as possible. For example, rather than talking about “environmental problems”, it’s better to focus on just one problem such as the availability of fresh water, and even better, the availability of fresh drinking water in California. Make sure to link the problem to human behavior, for example the large amount of fresh water that is used for outdoor irrigation, such as watering grass.

As a starting point, here’s a short list of possible problems, but feel free to choose others that are not included in the list below:
Environmental problems, such as climate change, species extinction, depletion of natural materials, water pollution, overpopulation, …
Poverty and economic disparities, prejudice, discrimination, obesity, homelessness
Educational disparities, unemployment, racial and gender inequality
Violence and aggression, bullying
Conflicts in relationships, divorce, child abuse, sex trafficking, dating violence
Substance use and abuse, vaping, smoking, binge drinking, impaired driving

Second, discuss a social psychology theory or principle (~1 page). You’re free to draw on any theory or principle discussed in class, or in your course readings. Make sure to describe the details of the theory, and include at least one reference. Examples of social psychological theories from this section of the course include: conformity, normative beliefs, obedience, social identity theory, persuasion, elaboration likelihood model, sleeper effect, attitude inoculation, reactance, compliance, selfdetermination theory, mindset, entitativity, social facilitation, social loafing, deindividuation, ostracism, wise interventions, ostracism, group think.

Finally, write a section in which you use the theory or principle to either understand or solve the problem (~1 page). It’s also appropriate here to describe a previous attempt to address the problem, and discuss whether it was effective or ineffective. Include at least one reference.

To summarize: Your paper should be ~3 pages in length, with at least 3 references. The paper should be written in APA style. Each paper will be worth 50 points, and will be graded based on five criteria: organization and clarity, APAstyle, social issue, social psychological theory, and application. The grading rubric that I’ll use to score these papers is available in Cougar Courses

To what extent do you think AI tools, like ChatGPT, will McDonaldize education? ChatGPT is being called “CheatGPT” do you think that’s fair? Why or why not? Overall, do you think that tools like ChatGPT will strengthen or weaken your education? Explain.

Sociology 101

This week, we are exploring institutions, which are the large scale societal entities that meet societal needs (family, education, economy, military, government, etc.). For this discussion board post, we’ll focus on education. Particularly, let’s explore the impact of ChatGPT and other AI text generators on education.

Background on McDonaldization: Sociologist, George Ritzer, coined the concept, McDonaldization, which is when society’s institutions take on the same characteristics of McDonalds (efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control). Consider that when you go to McDonalds, the product is standard, often no matter the location. (There is some variability to meet differing tastes across the world.) But the question becomes, does the efficiency and predictability impact quality? Ritzer said that the focus on predictability and efficiency made its way to institutions, like education. Standardized tests, for example, are a way that schooling is made more efficient and predictable, but whether or not standardized tests are indicative of high quality education is debated. Also, consider if you think the McDonaldization of education diminishes our humanity. Ritzer said there was a downside to McDonaldization: “Most specifically, irrationality means that rational systems are unreasonable systems. By that, I mean that they deny the basic humanity, the human reason, of the people who work within or are served by them.” Would you like more information on McDonaldization? Here’s a brief video Clip and here’s a ThoughtCo. explanation.

ChatGPT and other AI Text Generators: Check out this article. Also, view this corresponding video of a journalistic experiment using ChatGPT to try to pass an Advanced Placement high school class and this video showcasing the use of AI tools in the elementary school classroom. Then please address the following:

  1. To what extent do you think AI tools, like ChatGPT, will McDonaldize education?
  2. ChatGPT is being called “CheatGPT” do you think that’s fair? Why or why not?
  3. Overall, do you think that tools like ChatGPT will strengthen or weaken your education? Explain. (Maybe consider, do you want to use these tools freely as a student? Would you want educators to use these tools freely to create content and grade your work? Are there any exceptions to your thoughts? For example, would you want your doctor to have used ChatGPT on medical examinations as a student?

(Though syllabus policy this semester asks you not to use AI tools to generate your assignments, feel free to use for this discussion board post. But, please review the generated text to be sure you agree with the output entirely, as I want for this discussion to be based on your true feelings about ChatGPT and other generators.)
