Discuss his criminal scheme. How did he tailor his technique to prey on girls in high schools, what were their economic circumstances?

1. What two crimes did the grand jury charge Epstein with? What does “conspiracy” imply?
2. What is sex trafficking? What were the ages of the victims? What was the time-period?

Discuss his criminal scheme. How did he tailor his technique to prey on girls in high schools, what were their economic circumstances?

What are three steps that individuals can personally take to combat homophobia and homophobic tendencies? Why is it difficult for some individuals to take a public stance against homophobia?

Answer BOTH questions:

1. What are invisible privileges? Provide examples of three invisible privileges men have.

2. What are three steps that individuals can personally take to combat homophobia and homophobic tendencies? Why is it difficult for some individuals to take a public stance against homophobia?

Briefly describe the measurement of the independent and dependent variables you will use in your analysis (such as the “value label” or question; level of measurement; attributes, etc.). Briefly critique the measurement validity (e.g. face and content validity) of X and of Y.

Research Assignment Data Analysis (10 % points; about 6-10 pp.)
FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY, step by step. Use these nine sections to format your paper.

For data analyses, use IBM SPSS or: https://sda.berkeley.edu/sdaweb/analysis/?dataset=gss18

  1. Title your paper. Briefly state your general topic / research question.
  2. Reference and briefly describe a relevant scholarly article (or two) or book that in some way justifies or guides your research question and analyses or helps to make your approach to it more credible. Briefly indicate how it pertains to your topic or justifies your paper in some way, such as: the topic’s importance; what is not known about it; the article’s independent, dependent, or “control” variables and how they were operationalized / measured; or its findings, etc. Use good grammar & style of referencing.  Refer to author/s & date in body of paper, & include a reference page.   Use textbook as example for reference style.
  3. Briefly note the source of the data you will use for your analysis. What is your “N” (# of respondents)? Briefly evaluate data usefulness / limitations (e.g. refer to sample size, random selection, etc.).  NOTE: for any variable, GSS data often features missing data because that variable may not have been asked of all respondents for that “wave” of interviews.
  4. Briefly describe the measurement of the independent and dependent variables you will use in your analysis (such as the “value label” or question; level of measurement; attributes, etc.). Briefly critique the measurement validity (e.g. face and content validity) of X and of Y. Because you will be constructing cross-tabulation tables, your variables need ideally to be limited to 2-4 attributes / values.  (If your variable is ordinal, interval, or ratio, you may need to recode it to another variable with 2-3 attributes as you have learned in SPSS assignments 14 and 15).  If you are creating an index (bravo!), describe the creation of that index and its items. Provide references where appropriate.
  5. State your (2 variable) hypothesis. Briefly provide the theory or logic for your hypothesis
  6. DATA ANALYSES: Label (number and tersely describe) and order tables. Hint for printing: use “landscape” whenever useful. Please use “Cut and Paste” from data source to MS Word documents Omit redundant tables.

Using SPSS, conduct a frequencies data analysis of the 3-4 variables you will be using.  Briefly describe the frequency distributions, using the “valid percent” column because it omits missing data.  Note the mode category for each variable.  If you recode variables, provide frequencies of before & after recodes.

  1. Using SPSS, conduct a bivariate (cross-tab) data analysis between X (independent variable) and Y (dependent); percentage tables by columns; and click on Chi2 (if using SPSS). Be careful to place X as column and Y as row! Provide bivariate cross-tab between T (control variable) and Y.

Interpret the tables across the percentages of the rows of the table.  State whether there seems to be a relationship between X and Y (refer to Chi2 and / or 8-10% “rule of thumb”), and compare percentages on the dependent variables across categories of the independent variable as we did in class.  If no relationship appears to exist, briefly describe / speculate about a possible reason.

  1. Perform an “elaboration model” analysis with at least one 3rd / “control” variable (“T”). (Again, recode your variable into 2-3 attributes if necessary). Present the trivariate tables appropriate for assessing the effect of the control variable on the original relationship; that is, analyze each partial table for each attribute of the control variable.

Briefly interpret the tables as you did in step #7.   Which form of the elaboration model BEST represents your results (i. e. compare partial tables with zero-order table?)  Why?  If necessary, use “ex post facto hypothesizing” (cf. Babbie) to explain (or speculate about) your results (i.e. why might “T” be relevant, or not).  What other variables might be relevant to your analysis?

  1. Briefly provide a summary and conclusion about your research topic and your findings. E.g. how can you refer back to your hypothesis or your original article (step 2) or to other references?
  2. Separate Reference page
  3. APA format
  4. 6 pages 12 Font Times New Roman Double Space

What specific intervention strategies have you tried or plan to use to facilitate the desired changes or goal attainment based on the theories you have chosen?

FINAL PAPER

In this final paper, you are asked to apply all you have learned from the family

systems theories in analyzing a case you have handled or are handling. It aims to help you to integrate the theoretical concepts in an actual case. The analyses and discussion of intervention should be drawn from you learning through the assigned reading, lectures, videos, discussions, etc.

Address each of the following questions in your paper.

You should give background information of the family, the agency setting, and the circumstance under which the family sought help or was referred for service.

1) State clearly and succinctly the presenting problem(s) of this family, that is, what caused  them to come in for help or be referred by others for help.

2) Analyze the case and suggest some intervention strategies using concepts from at least two schools of family therapy you have learned in this course addressing the following aspects:

  1. a) The theoretical formulations of the “causes” of the presenting problem(s) or other

problems you have noted in this family.

  1. b) Describe the relational structure or other important dynamics of the family according to the theoretical orientations.
  1. c) How may the flaws of the family dynamics/unmet needs/self-defeating narratives/negative interactional cycles/limited emotional repertoire/misguided attempted solutions/previous generational legacies, etc. relate to the presenting or other problems?
  2. d) Based on the theoretical orientations, what are the treatment goals you have formulated accordingly, in addition to the reduction or eradication of the presenting problem(s)? Set specific and realistic goals as far as possible.
  3. e) What specific intervention strategies have you tried or plan to use to facilitate the desired changes or goal attainment based on the theories you have chosen?

This section is the major bulk of the paper and should constitute at least 5-6 pages.

3) What are some of the strengths of the family that you have observed, which could be mobilized?

4) Address the impact of the ecological contexts or the larger systems on the family. What are some of its resources and limitations for this family?

5) How may diversity issues affect the functioning of the family, if applicable?

6) Do you see issues that warrant advocacy for the family, which otherwise would be a violation of the basic human rights of the client/family and social justice?

7) What are some of the interface issues, including your own background (cultural or otherwise, similar to or different from the family) and counter-transference that you have to face in working with this family? Are there ethical dilemmas you may have to face as well? How have you handled them or plan to do so?

You may give the background information of your case by integrating it into your paper as you address the above questions. Or, you can write the case summary first, then analyze it according to the above guiding questions. The APA style of citation is expected if you cite references.

Do not give detailed explanation of the concepts, the main point is to apply the

concepts in analyzing your case.

You can cite references if it is appropriate and helpful in advancing understanding of the point you are making in relation to the case situation.

General Instructions:

  1. Use double line spacing and font size 12 for your paper.
  2. The length of your paper is expected to be 8 pages

Criteria for Evaluating the Paper:

1) The paper addresses each part of the questions and demonstrates understanding of the concepts.

2) The response shows familiarity with materials covered in the readings, lectures, videos and discussions.

3) The paper demonstrates efforts in integrating the learned concepts with case materials.

4) Relevant case materials or evidences are cited in support of your analyses and assessment. However, do not repeat some of background information provided in the case summary.

5) The stated treatment goals and suggested intervention strategies are specific and relevant in facilitating change and are family systems oriented instead of individually oriented.

6) The writing is grammatically correct and organized in a clear and logical fashion.

7) Compliance with the page limit and format.

8) Demonstration of competence according to the grading rubric towards the end of the syllab

Explain how a social scientist would go about investigating the research question you developed. In other words, what would the next steps be if a social scientist were to continue researching your question?

How to Do Well on Progress Check Two

You have 7 questions/sections to answer.  These are the 3 from Progress Check One and 4 additional.  I ask that you all follow the same general outline.  This helps when I go to grade your work.

  1. Introduction
  2. Describe the issue in the social sciences that you have selected to investigate. Why is this issue significant?
  • I expect you to revise this section based upon my feedback on your first progress check.
  • This section should be a paragraph, not a sentence.
  • You should bring in information from your research to support the significance of your social science issue. You are not an expert and your opinion along will not be enough to establish significance.
  1. Describe at least three social science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. Your sources must be relevant to your issue and must be of an academic nature appropriate for the issue. In your description, consider questions such as these: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
  • In this section, you are picking three resources from your research that you think you will use in your project. You are telling me what the resources are, citing in APA format.  Then, you are telling me about the resource and how you think you will use it in your project.  I am looking for a detailed analysis of your sources.  I want you to compare and contrast the three resources.  How do they meet the CRAAPO test?  How will you use the resource to be able to answer the questions of the assignment?
  • This section of your paper will probably be 2-3 paragraphs.
  1. Body
  2. Identify the social science principles that apply to your issue. In other words, which principles of social science apply to the issue you selected?
  • I expect you to revise this section based upon my feedback on your first progress check.
  • Most of you needed to add citation to your MindEdge textbook. I provide instructions on APA formatting for this textbook in the Announcements area of the course.  The rubric requires citations here.
  1. Explain how the principles you identified apply to your issue. In other words, how are the social science principles you identified relevant to your issue?
  • Give a specific explanation of how each principle you chose applies to your social science issue (with an examples). Again, you are not an expert, your opinion doesn’t carry much weight in your answer here.  This is supposed to be a research project.  What are you finding in your research?
  • Exemplary scoring will include evidence. What are you learning from your research that could be included here as evidence?  As you are researching, include the social science principles in your search terms.  For example, “drug use AND social norms.”  This will lead you to evidence to support your answer to this section.
  • Notice that this section of the rubric also requires citations. This section of your paper will probably be 2-3 paragraphs.

III. Conclusion

  1. Based on your investigation, develop a research question related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?
  • Your research question must meet the criteria for a good research question. Please see my announcement on
  • Your research question should be clear with a clear independent variable (the variable that is manipulated for study) and dependent variable (the behavior/attitude/outcome being measured – what you expect to change when you manipulate the independent variable).
  1. Explain how a social scientist would go about investigating the research question you developed. In other words, what would the next steps be if a social scientist were to continue researching your question?
  • I am looking for you to explain how to use the scientific method to answer the research question you came up with.  Please review the scientific method from Learning Block 2-1 and include in your Project One.  Review what steps a social scientist should take after developing a research question.

IV: Reference list

Provide a reference list that includes all of the social science resources you used to investigate your issue and question. Ensure that your list is formatted according to current APA guidelines.

  • Pay close attention to capitalization and punctuation.

Other Recommendations:

  • Your submission should be a paper, not a question and answer document. You should format it as an essay.

What will happen at the restaurant? What can you do next to repair the offense without your boss losing face?

There are two short essays that needed to be done ESSAY 1:
You are part of the National Swedish energy Bureau and a Nigerian conglomerate wants to get a contract for drilling your oil.
How can you refuse a bribe without offending the Nigerian’s conglomerate CEO who is very close to this deal nor losing the deal with the Nigerian company: 10 lines 5 points

ESSAY 2:
You are American and your boss insists that you and him take your Japanese client to a fast food to promote the American way of life when the Japanese client took you to the best restaurant in Tokyo.

What will happen at the restaurant?
What can you do next to repair the offense without your boss losing face? 5 points

How has this knowledge helped you identify it is important/worthy of further consideration?

My research question is:

How has the rise of islamophobia affected the daily lives of Asian Muslims living in the UK?

I need outline of the concepts below please.

I am asking you to review the literature in a breakdown of Four chapters:

1.Experience of Islamophobia

2.Identifying and Othering

3.Race and Racialisation

4.Media and Politics influence

  1. Experience of Islamophobia

( not in order)

  • Gendered Islamophobia
  • Islamophobia experience at both institutional and personal level

( institutional – work (employment, treated in office), education, policing and the state

  • Personal level – harassment, name calling, violence towards Muslims from the majority (in UK).
  1. Identifying and othering
  • Different ways Muslims identify (male and female)
  • Alienated from majority through identification
  1. Race and racialisation -essentialism etc…
  2. Media and Political influence

Keep the below in mind when writing:

  • Identify which bodies of work/strands of thinking (e.g. literature on stigma/agency/identity construction/modes of representation) are helpful to answer our research question?
  • What is already known in relation to your question?
  • How has this knowledge helped direct you to this particular research problem?
  • How has this knowledge helped you identify it is important/worthy of further consideration?
  • How has the literature shaped our understanding of some of the sub-questions (might want more specific lit here – e.g. stigma in relation to students with disabilities/identity construction amongst mixed race young people/media representation of gay men in politics)?
  • What other things do we need to take account of?
  • Where will you go from here?

What are the utility and limitations of using this scholarly perspective/analysis to analyze the issues you encounter or are concerned with?

A. Students are expected to write one separate response paper (4 pages/around 1000 words, double-spaced; 12-point font; and 1-inch margin). The response paper should cover ONE assigned reading on the topics we cover between Week 6 and 10.
B. The spirit of this response paper is to link what the authors argue to what you think. You are encouraged to critically engage the assigned readings and let me know what you agree with and what you disagree with. Be sure to support your opinions with evidence and careful reasoning.
C. In the response paper, I encourage you to use the following questions as guidelines:
• What are the analytical themes raised in the assigned readings? What are the central arguments that the authors make?
• To what extent do you agree with the analysis that these authors provide?
• What are the utility and limitations of using this scholarly perspective/analysis to analyze the issues you encounter or are concerned with?
• What new questions does an article or book generate? What questions does it leave unanswered?)

ELT 5 – How do sociologists understand and study pandemics?
Our semester was abruptly disrupted on March 12 when the BC provincial government banned all public gatherings over 250 people and UBC immediately cancelled all large lecture over 250. Since that Thursday life in Canada has dramatically changed. The Canadian government has closed the borders to foreign nationals, schools have closed, non-essential stores have shut their doors, Canadians abroad have been asked to return home and quarantine for 14 days (while some people can return others are trapped in countries like Peru and Italy.) Last week the liberals announced an Economic response plan where they plan to provide up to $27 billion dollars to support business and worker. The news is covering COVID 19 on a 24-hour loop. These drastic government responses fueled by a constant flow of information on the COVID 19 outbreak has created mass panic. Public health keeps asking the public to engage in social distancing and stay home. The public reacted in many ways. Some people were shopping and stocking up on toilette paper, masks, hand sanitizer and soap. Other people are denying the seriousness of the virus. Needless to say, the Coronavirus has changed the way we are working, socializing, and relating to other people.
For this ELT, I want you to think like a sociologist and provide an analysis of Canada’s (and the World’s) response to the COVID 19 outbreak. Here are some topics with questions to consider. Students will choose ONE bullet point below and write a thoughtful response that draws on course material to explain this COVID 19 pandemic in 3 – 5 paragraphs (500 words or 1 – 2 pages). Student should draw on course concepts or theories to explain their response.
How is a pandemic defined? Who has the power to define COVID 19 as one? How do other use competing definitions in an attempt to change or alter that definition? That is, how has COVID 19 been defined? What is the role of the media in pandemics? How is the media treating the COVID 19 outbreak? How has government responded to the outbreak? How have citizens responded to the virus? What do these responses say about our societies? What are the consequences of the government’s decisions to declare public emergencies, close the borders to foreign nationals, limit services provided? Will everyone in Canada receive the same medical attention if they fall ill from the virus?

Good work. Student answered most the question in a paragraph form. Student demonstrated a strong understanding of sociological theories and concepts. Student applied concepts and theories well but missed a key point. There were a few spelling and grammatical errors. Includes some APA citations.

Student answered half of the question in a paragraph form. Student appears to understand theories and concept but needs to explain them more clearly. Started to apply concepts and theories but was missing key points. There were many spelling and grammatical errors that took away from the student’s ideas. Includes some citations and there are some errors in formatting.
Student did not answer the questions in paragraph form. Student did not comprehend or apply sociological theories appropriately. It was difficult to understand what they were discussing and there were many citation and grammatic problems.
Did not follow the instructions and complete the task as proposed.
