ESSAY ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS

In General Psychology, you will write several essays throughout the term. For each essay you will answer a question about the Module: Week topic(s), writing in a way that is engaging and furthers discussion on the topic. Use the guidelines below to write a substantive essay:

1. Each essay must include at least 400 words.

2. While meeting the word count is important, it is possible to write an essay that is long enough, but not substantive enough to earn full credit. The second criteria of a good essay is including a clear and substantial answer to the prompt. When preparing your essay, ask yourself,
• Does my essay answer the question or questions being posed?
• Does it clearly answer all parts of the question, supported by course materials?

3. When answering the essay question, it is important to use concepts, research, and/or theories from the Module: Week material to support your thoughts. A good essay will:
• Offer a thoughtful response on the topic being discussed, and
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the topic by using material from the resources provided for that Module: Week in your answer. Using anecdotes or personal experiences are not as substantial or scholarly as using research and/or theory to advance the discussion.

4. A good essay offers something new and fresh.
• Avoid simply answering the question with a simple response or reiteration of what the textbook says.
• Present information in a way that advances thought on the topic and shows a clear understanding of and reflection on the material.
• Demonstrate your knowledge by presenting facts.
• Demonstrate your understanding by providing practical application.
• This does not mean that you write and write and write, but rather that you present a thought-filled and reflective essay that addresses the question being asked in a way that demonstrates a true depth of understanding of the Module: Week material.

5. A good essay is written in a scholarly way. Each essay:
• Is free of grammatical and spelling errors,
• Uses current APA format (Student Standards),
• Includes in-text citations and a reference section,
• Includes an APA-formatted title page,
• Demonstrates a solid understanding of course concepts by using scholarly sources rather than personal experience or anecdotes.

Determine if there is the potential to employ a mixed methods approach. Explain how your degree path informs your research approach. Justify and construct a theoretical or conceptual framework for the research problem; this section must be clearly written to ensure that the reader is seeing the proposed research through your framework.

Appraise the Merits of Using Qualitative Method

Continue with the CITI training. This week’s readings and activities were introspective: you had to evaluate how your choice of a degree path and your worldview will affect your research. Now you will appraise the merits of qualitative research designs.

Begin your paper with an overview of the value of qualitative research (1-2 cited paragraphs). Be sure to make the connection between the research problem and the qualitative approach.

Determine if there is the potential to employ a mixed methods approach (1-2 cited paragraphs).

Explain how your degree path informs your research approach (1-2 cited paragraphs).

Based on your discovery of your worldview, share your thoughts about how this will affect your research (1-2 cited paragraphs).

Justify and construct a theoretical or conceptual framework for the research problem; this section must be clearly written to ensure that the reader is seeing the proposed research through your framework.

Include a brief discussion on how your degree type affected your framework selection.

Apply the qualitative method to the research problem. Begin with a one-page introduction about the circumstances that led to the development of the problem; do not state the problem in this section. Establish the existence of your research problem using three to four scholarly articles published within the last five years.

Apply the Qualitative Method and the Research Problem

The focus of this week’s assignment is on applying the qualitative method to the research problem. Begin with a one-page introduction about the circumstances that led to the development of the problem; do not state the problem in this section. Establish the existence of your research problem using three to four scholarly articles published within the last five years. Remember that the problem must have a business administration focus, and must relate to your degree specialization. Keep your research focus and problem simple for this assignment.

NOTE: this framework must be used for your assignment response. Use one sentence for each of the following:

Hook: An attention-grabbing statement that is supported by the literature.

Anchor: An evidence of the problem statement that includes a statistic and is supported by primary research.

A statement of the general business problem.

A statement of the specific business problem.

This script is helpful to (a) frame the problem, (b) validate that it exists with verifiable data, and (c) identify why and for whom the problem matters (Bakari 2018).

Next, rationalize the use of the qualitative method for your research inquiry. Explain the features. Give examples of the intended research outcomes. Formulate a purpose statement using the framework.

NOTE: this framework must be used for your assignment response.

Write a three to four page essay analyzing it through a close reading that takes the poem completely apart. Each line of the poem should be discussed in depth to support your thesis. Robert Frost “Out, Out-“

Write an essay that defends a thesis developed through a close critical reading/analysis of poem.

This essay shall rely on textual support from the primary text.

Do not confuse “critical analysis” with “summary” nor should you speak of “relating” to the poem; the goal is to develop, sustain, and advance a thesis based on a critique of the primary text.

Multiple Choice Questions

Critical Thinking Assignment

Directions
Your instructor will provide you with a topic for this assignment. The assignment has multiple steps that will take time to complete. In steps one and two, you will conduct research on your topic using the online databases from Greenville Technical College’s Library. In step three you will create notecards from your research, and in the final step, you will participate in an online debate.

Step One: Go to the Source
Go to
Greenville Technical College’s website
Click Student Resources, then Library Services

Then “Click Here to Start Your Online Search…”

Click Research, then Databases * NOTE: If you are offcampus, then you will need your Student ID number or library card to access the databases

Click AZ tab on top of page

Click the “O” tab and then click Opposing Viewpoints in Context.

Using the topic your instructor assigned, click on the topic, and it will lead you to various subheadings such as “Featured Viewpoints,” “Viewpoints,” “News,” and “Magazines.”

“Viewpoints” typically the best option, but please read beyond the first few; obviously, we don’t want to duplicate the same data, the same findings.

Step Two: Time to Read
Now it’s time to read from the list of sources. If you find some interesting, worthy information, then you can save it, bookmark it, or even print it.

As you read, you may want to consider “holes” in the authors’ arguments; for example, are they over generalizing? Do you disagree with them? Why or why not?

Be an active reader. Ask questions. Like a good detective, you are trying to gather evidence.

Step Three: Let’s Make Some Note Cards
Note cards are an excellent way to organize your thoughts and information, whether you’re studying for a test, preparing for a speech or debate, or even crafting a lengthy essay or research paper. Note cards help you prepare and arrange the information you are about to insert and utilize, either vocally or written.

Now that you have read some amazingly cool stuff, let’s get that information down while it’s still fresh.

Using the provided note card template, create five cards that support the argument and then create five note cards that are against the argument or topic.
When you have both sides of the topic, then you can critically argue with good facts, statistics, and ideas. This is what critical thinking is all about.

Watch out for assumptions, claims, and faulty/fallacious reasoning. *See fallacious reasoning document attached to this assignment.

Finally, make two MLAstyle bibliography cards. In MLA format, this is called a Works Cited page, and it is the last page in an essay or research paper. In other words, we always want to give credit where credit is due if the ideas don’t belong to us, and we take credit for them, then it would be considered plagiarism.

The “Source Citation” will be at the bottom of the article, so transfer that information to the cards; have one “for” bibliography card, and one “against” bibliography card. This will give you a total of twelve cards.

Congratulations! You’ve done it, and if you want more information on MLA style formatting, you can also visit the

Attach your 12 note cards to the Critical Thinking Assignment.

Step Four: Prepare to Share
Now that you have created your awesome twelve notes cards, it’s time to share for the debate on the discussion board.

Go to the Critical Thinking Debate discussion on the Discussion Board

State your position on the issue and one of the points from your note cards to the discussion board.

Respond to at least two other classmate’s postings, stating your position on the issue and using information from your cards.
