In this discussion, you’ll choose one of those questions, and address how it is answered throughout the readings for the lesson. As you answer, be sure to cite the readings and authors as you address the question.

Address one of the following questions in a post to the discussion forum. You are encouraged to answer from an academic point of view (lecture and readings) as well as your own personal or professional experience. There is no length requirement, but the writing should be enough to fully explain your thoughts.
1. What are some common themes/lessons from the two readings by Campbell and Schoenfeld and Surrette and Kampe?
2. What national-level factors have fostered common directions in criminal justice policy, e.g., large scale increases in incarceration from 1980s–2000s?
3. In the Campbell and Schoenfeld reading, what do they identify as three periods of penal change? What are your thoughts on these? Do you agree with this conceptual scheme or disagree?
4. How much do you think media drive public opinion and criminal justice policy? How much do you think media simply cater to criminal justice attitudes that the public already has?
5. How much crime control through deterrence or incapacitation has mass incarceration produced? Have there been diminishing returns?
6. Are there more effective ways to expend criminal justice resources than imprisonment, if the goal is crime control?
