ENG3310 Film Genres

Rhetorical Purpose
This assignment asks you to create an original argument, interpretation, or reading of a film of your choice from our class and support this thesis with selections from the text itself, while also adding to the critical dialogue already CD surrounding the text.

A literary/filmic analysis research paper should:

  • Present an original thesis statement that serves as the main argument and topic of the paper
  • Incorporate both direct quotes and scene descriptions/paraphrasing from the film as evidence supporting the thesis
  • Discuss secondary, scholarly sources from critics that discuss the film or concept related to your thesis
  • Seek connections between your sources to draw conclusions and claims
  • Organize and present your findings in written format

This project should help you:

  • Compose an original argumentative statement.
  • Support argumentative claims with textual filmic evidence.
  • Develop skills to conduct and use primary research effectively.
  • Develop skills to locate, read, and engage with different kinds of secondary sources.
  • Practice writing with sources in a variety of ways.

Research and Evidence
To begin, you will engage with a primary text and create a specific argument or literary analysis of the film. This film should be any of the films we have previously studied in the course. You may incorporate discussion of other texts of your own interest in addition to this film.
