QUESTION 5 0.25 points
Scenario: You are a researcher and your interviewee says something that is really shocking personal information about themselves. They did something that, while not criminal, was what you consider to be immoral. At that moment you think to yourself, “Wow, I can’t believe they told me that and think I’d be okay with it. This person is terrible, and I want to tell them how bad they are.” What should you do? Tell the interviewee that you’d prefer if they do not discuss that kind of behavior, as immorality will taint your study. Change the subject as quickly as possible. Sociologists are not interested at all in “deviant” behavior so it is a waste of time to talk about it. Leave the interview immediately. Since you can no longer be rational about the interview, you are no longer qualified to analyze the data. Treat them with empathy, even if you don’t agree with it. Perhaps you would not do what they did, but your interviewee is certainly not the first person to do it and certainly not the last, and it is a social researcher’s job to understand and explain, not to judge.

Investigator bias, when the researcher is consciously or consciously trying to find a theme in their research. All of the above.

QUESTION 8 0.5 points

What factors contributed to the power grid failure in Texas during February 2021? What other areas have experienced rolling blackout recently? How does climate change potentially factor into future grid security in Texas and elsewhere?

Texas power grid crisis

As we will be learning, the power grid is meant to offer greater stability and consistency in electric power delivery to end users. However, extreme weather events and other crises can lead to large portions of the grid going offline, leaving consumers in a major (sometimes deadly) lurch. This week you are taking a look at an AP article that examines what happened during the February 2021 Texas power grid failure.

You can find the article here: https://apnews.com/article/why-texas-power-grid-failed-2eaa659d2ac29ff87eb9220875f23b34 please answer the first question before reading.

 Before reading the article:

  1. Before reading the article – had you heard about the February 2021 Texas power grid crisis? What were your impressions of the causes/impacts? Was anyone you know impacted?

Now that you have read the article:

  1. What factors contributed to the power grid failure in Texas during February 2021?
  2. What other areas have experienced rolling blackout recently?
  3. How does climate change potentially factor into future grid security in Texas and elsewhere?
  4. What might be done to help safeguard Texas against similar issues in the future?
  5. Most states in the US are interconnected in larger regional grid systems. Google around to look into why Texas is the only state that operates its own grid. Responses can be short, but please link to the source you used.
