Supporting Colleagues with At-Risk and Struggling Readers

Imagine you are part of a K-3 PLC team and your colleagues come to you seeking instructional advice. Some of your colleagues are asking for your input on how to support students’ struggling with specific literacy skills. Write a 150-250 word response to each scenario that includes the following information:

  • Describe at least two effective instructional practices based on the Science of Reading.
  • Provide ideas for one short-term and one long-term literacy goal for each student.
  • Create at least one follow-up question you could ask the teacher while providing advice.
  • Identify any other professionals the teacher could collaborate with in the school or community to support the students who are struggling with reading.

Scenario 1: One of the second grade teachers has a student who has been receiving small group instruction in phonics. When progress was monitored last week, the student’s accuracy score dropped 7 points. In reviewing the errors, the teachers noticed he is missing vowel teams, which has been the focus of the small group instruction. What additional ideas and strategies can you provide the teacher to support this individual student?

Scenario 2: As the end of the year approaches, one of the kindergarten teachers has a small group of students that has not mastered the skill of recognizing rhyming words. The students can produce word families, but when given two words they are not able to recognize if they rhyme or not. What strategies can you provide the teacher to help this small group of students master the skill?

Scenario 3: A third grade teacher has a student who is a fast and accurate reader. She can answer multiple choice questions but cannot retell them on her own. When asked to retell, she stares at the teacher with a blank face. How can the teacher support her in further developing her comprehension skills?

Scenario 4: A first grade teacher has a student who has been identified as having dyslexia. She reads very slowly, often making many mistakes. How can the teacher support her in further developing her fluency?

Clarify the underlying principles and the values you can trace in your leadership. Explain how well your teaching corresponds with your own visions. What ethical dilemmas can arise?

Practical professional theory

You must formulate a text that describes your practical professional theory with references to relevant literature and the current curriculum. Here you demonstrate knowledge of the connection between proven experience and scientific basis, as well as your didactic perspectives and practical approach.
The purpose is to raise awareness and be able to communicate one’s practical occupational theory. It is about making visible professional competence, both experience-based and theoretically anchored.
You start from at least one area that is particularly important to you.

The practical professional theory contains three dimensions:
1. Practical dimension: Here, you must write about how and with what you work/will work as teacher. What do you do in the day-to-day business? Give examples.
Think about how you usually do when you plan and carry out teaching. Describe, e.g., how you organize teaching

2. Theoretical dimension: Here, you must write about research and experiences to explain why you want to do as you do in your practice. Describe research and experiences that help you anchor what you choose/chosen to work with or working methods that you choose/choose to use. What does it say in the literature, policy documents, etc., about what you do? Give examples. (NOTE: references – not citations)
– You can say that this is an analysis of and reflection on what you do. Here you can take support in the literature that you have come into contact with to clarify the underlying issues of the principles/theories in your teaching.

3. Ethical dimension: What view of learning, people, knowledge, and society do you have, and how should you want to construct your teaching – a vision of what you want to achieve as a teacher, and it should be one explanation for why you do what you do in your practice. What does your ethical approach look like? Give an example. Does it agree with the curriculum and other governing documents? (NOTE: references – not citations).

– Clarify the underlying principles and the values you can trace in your leadership.
– Explain how well your teaching corresponds with your own visions.
– What ethical dilemmas can arise?

Write a three-page paper reporting on the results of your interviews including your own perspective following the interviews.

Assignment 3: Field Research – A Parent’s Perspective vs A Teacher’s Perspective

Throughout your textbook, there are perspective inserts related to different topics that showcase how parents and teachers are viewing particular family engagement issues and/or barriers. (See pp. 7,10, 12, 15, 17, 32, 35, 44, 47, 48, 54, 52, 64, 82, 84, 92, 94, and 98)
Read through these to get a feel of the many issues and barriers facing early childhood educators in the realm of family engagement.

1. Spend about 30 to 60 minutes interviewing a parent from a family other than the traditional nuclear family. Ask about specific challenges and/or positive experiences they face when trying to participate in family engagement activities at their child’s preschool or childcare center.

2. Spend about 30 to 60 minutes interviewing a teacher at a preschool or childcare program. This person doesn’t have to work at the center where the above parent sends his/her children to school, but the type questions and focus of the interview should be the same topic which is what are the challenges and/or positive experiences do parents face when trying to participate in family engagement activities at their child’s preschool or childcare center.
1. Write a three-page paper reporting on the results of your interviews including your own perspective following the interviews. Include the following:

a. Cover page

b. Page one – Interview with a parent

c. Page two – interview with a teacher

d. Page three – self-interview

e. Reference page

e. Format your write-up for each interview with the categories modeled in the textbook: Description (background of person being interviewed, date, time, place of interview, and occupation); Challenges (what challenges does the interviewee identify as being barriers to family engagement); Strategies (what strategies does the interviewee identify that they used to address the challenges); and Results (what outcomes does the interviewee report).

f. Format your self-interview with the model as above. But, you must be more reflective and report how you now view the topic (challenges, strategies, results) now that you’ve interviewed the topic from two perspectives.

g. Include a reference page that includes your textbook and one additional source.

h. Write your paper using a basic APA 7th edition format. (cover page, two pages for the body, reference page, double space, 12 point font, Times New Roman, 1 in margins on all sides)
