List and explain at least two reasons Maureen may fairly expect excellent job candidates by hiring former varsity athletes, and list and explain at least two reasons Maureen may not end up with optimal candidates by advantaging former varsity athletes when selecting employees. Explain the sociological factors that inform your answer.

Emphasis should be put on sociology in sport

Prompt 1:
You are the athletics director at a private mixed-gender high school in Montreal. Your school, which was founded in 1907, has a very rich athletic history that has traditionally centered around the men’s football team. Many prominent, wealthy alumni are supporters of the team. Recently, after hearing stories in the media about the risk of concussion associated with football, some parents have begun to question whether it remains appropriate for the school to offer a football team. Although the risk of concussion was the factor that first raised questions, it seems there are many mixed-ideas amongst the parents, staff, and supporters regarding the risk and benefits of maintaining the football program. List and discuss three reasons to support maintaining the football program and three reasons to support cancelling the football program.

Prompt 2:
Affirmative action is defined as the practice or policy of favouring individuals belonging to groups known to have been discriminated against. For example, companies may be more likely to hire a sports broadcaster who is a visible minority (e.g., gender, racial, ethnic) to demonstrate their value of promoting cultural diversity. Discuss the potential positive and negative implications of affirmative action within sporting contexts.

Prompt 3:
Research has shown that many parasport coaches consider themselves to be “accidental experts”. The term “accidental expert” refers to the fact that parasport coaches are often able-bodied, had no intention of coaching parasport athletes at the outset of their coaching careers (i.e., had no specific training related to adapted sport), were introduced to parasport coaching when an athlete with a disability entered their program, and subsequently have had to learn (often on their own) everything they need to know about coaching parasport. Using course content, discuss the sociological factors that explain how our sport systems have been set up in such a way that parasport coaches are so often “accidental experts”.

Prompt 4:
Maureen is the CEO of a medical devices company and she is currently recruiting candidates for the Director of Sales position in her company. When Maureen reviews application packages, she finds she is always attracted to candidates who were former athletes, particularly those who competed at the varsity level in University. In her career Maureen has had several former varsity athletes as employees and she has consistently been impressed by their performance. List and explain at least two reasons Maureen may fairly expect excellent job candidates by hiring former varsity athletes, and list and explain at least two reasons Maureen may not end up with optimal candidates by advantaging former varsity athletes when selecting employees. Be sure to explain the sociological factors that inform your answer.

What is the mean weight change for each of the three weight loss program groups (in pounds)? What is the F test statistic value from the ANOVA that you performed in SPSS? Does your F test statistic value exceed the critical F value? What can you conclude about the three weight loss programs as a result?

Health statistics

Dataset Information:

You are a researcher examining the effect of different weight loss programs on change in weight after four months. You obtain a sample of 150 total patients, all similar ages, who are seeking to lose weight for health reasons with the approval and oversight of their primary care physician. These patients choose to participate in one of three programs, for a total of 50 patients in each program: 1. Diet alone 2. Exercise alone 3. Diet and exercise in combination After participating in their chosen program for four months, patients’ change in weight is measured in pounds. You would like to compare mean weight change between the three groups to determine the effect of type of weight loss program. Your dataset contains a unique identifier for each patient (“patient_ID”) along with a group assignment for each patient (“program”). The value for “program” is either “diet,” “exercise,” or “diet and exercise” depending on which program the patient participated in. Finally, there is a variable called “weight_change” which shows patients’ weight change after program participation, measured in pounds. This dataset is an Excel file entitled “Weight Dataset.xlsx” which can be found on Blackboard under Course Content > Module 11: ANOVA > Module 11 Assignment. You decide to compare mean weight change values across the three programs using one-way ANOVA with a significance level of α=0.05. This will help you to determine the effect of program on weight change. Your hypotheses are as follows: H0: 𝜇𝐷𝑖𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑒 = 𝜇𝐸𝑥𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑒 = 𝜇𝐷𝑖𝑒𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑖𝑠𝑒 H1: At least one 𝑋̅ is different

Assignment Instructions: Using complete sentences, answer the following questions from your analysis:

  1. What is the mean weight change for each of the three weight loss program groups (in pounds)?
  2. What is the F test statistic value from the ANOVA that you performed in SPSS?
  3. You have set your significance level at α=0.05 and performed a one-way simple ANOVA. Using this information and the two sets of degrees of freedom from your SPSS output, what is the critical F value for your test? (Hint: use Table B.3 in Appendix B in your textbook. If you don’t see the exact number of degrees of freedom in your textbook, select the critical F value that corresponds to the closest number of degrees of freedom.)
  4. Does your F test statistic value exceed the critical F value? What can you conclude about the three weight loss programs as a result?
  5. Discuss the null hypothesis in your answer, and whether you reject or fail to reject it
