Mid-Range Nursing Theory Description – Paper

  • Each student will develop a paper presenting a scholarly description of a mid-range nursing theory.. See Chinn & Kramer’s Guide for the Description of Theory (chapter 8).
  • At least 2 primary sources, secondary sources used sparingly.
AREA EVALUATED POSSIBLE POINTS EARNED POINTS
PURPOSE    
Present the purpose of the theory… why was this theory developed? Who does it specifically apply to…the patient, the nurse, society, groups? Is it applicable for a specific population or could it apply more generally? 10  
CONCEPTS    
Explain the major concepts and sub concepts of the theory… How many are there? Major? Minor? Broadly or narrowly focused? Do the concepts represent objects, properties, events? 15  
DEFINITIONS    
Discuss the definitions of the concepts…how are they defined…or are they defined? Do some lack definition or clear definition? 15  
RELATIONSHIPS    
Present the major relationships among the concepts of the theory. Are all of the concepts addressed? In what way? Are the relationships directional…or are they neutral? Are the relationships illustrated? 15  
STRUCTURE    
Discuss the structure of the theory. Address the organization…how easy can you follow it? How are the concepts linked? (linear?) How complete is the structure? 15  
ASSUMPTIONS    
Discuss the underlying assumptions of the theory. Are they explicit, implicit, or derivable from the context? Could the assumptions be factually verified? Where are the assumptions within the structure of the theory? 15  
REFERENCES    
·         At least two primary sources are expected

·         Secondary sources may be sparingly used to support the paper

SCHOLARLY ASPECTS AND STYLE    
·         Presentation is thorough, well organized, logical, and is easy to follow.

·         APA format, scholarly style.

·         Use of headings in your paper is expected

·         Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc

·         Page length: 4-5
