This essay should investigate Grey’s anatomy TV show and demonstrate the key areas, contexts themes that your written essay will analyse in greater depth. This is your opportunity to explain your research topic, reasons for your film/TV show choice, and set out the methodology of your analysis. For example, how does your example text illustrate a particular industry, or perhaps: audience, national identity, gender, genre, or other theme/topic?

 

  • You can ask yourself questions:
  • Why is a particular film or TV show important to research?
  • What stands out, in terms of its production context; commercial success; critical reception; audience reaction; or other factor?
  • What is distinctive? What do I, or a potential audience, want to know more about after watching it?
  • What can be learnt from it? – you can analyse content as well as context
  • Why is a particular film or TV show important to research?
  • Where/when was it made? Who made it – in terms of cast, crew, production company, etc?
  • What stands out, in terms of its production context; commercial success; critical reception; audience reaction; or other factor?
  • You could also consider other factors discussed throughout the course – in terms of awards; festivals; distribution; promotion; etc.
  • What is distinctive? What do I, or a potential audience, want to know more about after watching it?
  • What is the main focus of the film/TV show? The characters? The story? Wider themes and contexts?
  • Are these things highlighted by the text’s content, or certain contextual factors?
  • What can be learnt from it?
  • In terms of both content (such as styles, conventions, etc), and wider contexts (for example, its production, setting, etc).

Have you understood the topic of the brief? Are you able to communicate your knowledge and understanding of the wider subject area that your case study is situated in?

Have you structured your video essay appropriately, including an introduction and conclusion, for example? Is the script to a high standard with minimal errors? Have you referenced your sources?

 

Critical Judgement

 

Is there a coherent argument in your piece? Are you able to articulate thinking beyond those sources that you have referenced?
